MARRIAGE REGISTRY (APPROVAL)

For a marriage celebrated abroad to be valid in Bolivia, it must be registered at the Consulate of Bolivia.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Marriage certificate
    • Document that must be certified by the Secretary of State where it was issued as well as the authentication of the Department of State of the United States of America (See Legalization procedure).
    • The Marriage Certificate must be translated into Spanish, the Consulate General of Bolivia in Washington DC may perform the translation (See translation procedure)
    • The legalization and translation of the marriage certificate by the Consulate is mandatory
  2. Original or legalized photocopy of the husband's birth certificate
    • If one of the spouses is not Bolivian, he must perform the same procedure to legalize or apostille his birth certificate
    • No translation of any of the certificates is required
    • Simple copies of birth certificates will not be accepted
  3. Original identity documents of both spouses (Current)
    • Bolivian Passport  or Identity Card
    • Foreigners valid passport
  4. Presentation of two (2) witnesses of valid identity documents
    • Witnesses should not necessarily be Bolivians
  5. Proof of current residence
    1. Basic services invoice, rental agreements etc.
  6. Both parties must be present. In the event that one of the spouses is prevented from requesting approval at the Consulate General of Bolivia in Washington DC, they must present a Special Power duly legalized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Plurinational State of Bolivia (if it is in Bolivia) o Special Power duly legalized through a Consulate of Bolivia in the United States (if it is in the United States) or Special Power duly legalized through a Bolivian consulate outside the United States or Bolivia.

No appointments are required.

COST:

  • Marriage approval and registration in the Marriage Books between Bolivians entitled to a Marriage Certificate and Family Book: $ 30.00.
  • Marriage approval and registration in the Marriage Books when one or two of the spouses is a foreigner with the right to a Marriage Certificate and Family Book: $ 100.00.
  • Legalization of signature in Marriage Certificate not granted by the Consul, between Bolivians or a Bolivian person with a foreign person (original or photocopy): $ 15.00.
  • Translation of Marriage Certificate not issued by the Consulate: $ 10.00.
  • Traduccion de Certificado de Matrimonio no emitido por el Consulado: $10.00.
